0:20 All right. 0:22 Day five. 0:23 We're going to drill down on verse 16, but before we do, I want to read it in context, Philippians 2, 12 to 16. 0:29 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 0:39 For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 0:46 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor 1:07 in vain. 1:08 Paul says, Hold fast to the word of life. 1:12 You see, the reality is this you will hold fast to something. 1:16 To hold fast means to grip or to maintain something firmly and to not let go. 1:22 And so, since you got to hold on to something in this life, you better hold on to what will not let you down. 1:27 You better cling to what brings life, does not bring death. 1:31 You better cling to the word of life, which is the person and work of Jesus, and we know him by the word that he has given us. 1:40 Jesus says it this way in Matthew chapter 7. 1:43 He says, Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock, and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 1:59 That when we hold fast to the word of life, it does not prevent us from suffering, but Christ perseveres through the suffering with us. 2:07 And it says in verse 26 and following, and everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand, and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the wind blew, and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. 2:25 How many of you have seen your friends or family members, men who have built incredible things here in this world, but they did not hold on to the word of God? 2:35 And when pain and suffering or dumb decisions or sin or a broken world came their way, their life fell apart, and great was the fall of it. 2:45 So let me ask you, are you being discipled by the world or word? 2:51 Are you being discipled primarily by the world or word? 2:55 If you're not getting into the word over and over and over, then you will primarily be discipled by this world. 3:03 One will lead to life and life abundantly, and one leads to death and destruction. 3:09 Let's talk about the difference between being discipled by the world or disciple by the word. 3:14 We'll talk about the big three that uh first John says the enemy throws at us all the time: lust of the eyes. 3:20 This is the desire to have. 3:22 The world says money will make you happy. 3:26 That's what the world says. 3:27 The world says the more stuff you die with, you win. 3:31 The world says money actually says to us, if you love me, I'll love you back. 3:36 I will bring you satisfaction and security. 3:39 It's just not true. 3:41 The word says that no one can serve two masters. 3:44 The word says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. 3:49 The word says that we should seek first his kingdom and righteousness. 3:55 And then all these things, satisfaction and security, he will give us. 3:59 Let's look at the lust of the flesh. 4:01 This is the desire to feel. 4:03 This might be the granddaddy of them all right now in our crooked and depraved generation. 4:07 You see, we live in a world that says that you deserve to feel happy. 4:12 In fact, we live in a world that says what you feel like is the foundation of your life. 4:17 And we live in a world that wants to require everybody else to play along with the silly games that whatever they feel like they want to identify as, that is actually who they are. 4:26 That's what the world says. 4:28 The world says is it if it makes you happy, do some more of it. 4:32 The word says, if you're going to follow after Christ, that we are to crucify our flesh. 4:40 I mean, Galatians says 220, I am crucified with Christ. 4:45 It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. 4:48 And the life that I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. 4:54 That we follow Jesus. 4:56 We do not follow the temporary whims of our feelings. 5:01 Or let's look at the third one the enemy throws at us, the pride of life. 5:05 The world says, you do you boo. 5:08 That's right. 5:09 You make much of yourself. 5:10 You chase likes and blue checks and popularity and you make sure that everybody thinks you're a really big deal. 5:16 That's what the world says. 5:18 You accomplish all of your hopes and your dreams so that you get all the credit that you want. 5:23 Well, the word says something different. 5:25 The word says, humble yourself. 5:28 The word says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God. 5:33 The word says, Blessed are the meek. 5:35 Blessed are you when you don't make much of yourself, but you turn the reins over to Jesus Christ. 5:44 Folks, may you hold fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ, I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
