0:20 All right, welcome back, day two. 0:21 In our study in Philippians chapter 2, verses 12 to 16, I'm gonna read it. 0:25 Not out of laziness, but repetition matters when it comes to the Word of God. 0:28 I want you to hear it in context so that as we do a deep dive in small parts, it makes more and more sense. 0:34 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work, for his good pleasure. 0:51 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor 1:09 in vain. 1:09 Today I just want to do a deep dive just on verse 13. 1:14 So right after he says, work out your salvation, you may ask, all right, Paul, how am I going to work out my salvation? 1:21 Here's how, verse 13, for it, the working out of your salvation, for it is God who works in you, both will and work for his good pleasure. 1:32 So, again, yesterday we are told to work out our salvation. 1:36 Again, it's not like you work out a math problem to see if you stand right before God, but Christ has given us this free gift of salvation that costs him everything. 1:46 And when you put your faith in him, he puts his spirit in you. 1:49 And so now what he is saying is get to work putting on display for the world what God has put in you. 1:56 Well, Paul, how do we do that? 1:57 Here's how you do it, verse 13. 1:59 For it is God who works in you, that God is the beginning and the end of our salvation, that God is the justifier, the one that paid the price, that your sins would be paid for, but God is also the sanctifier in your life. 2:14 That the gospel isn't just merely the ABCs of our salvation, it's the A to Z. 2:19 And it is the very gift of the gospel. 2:22 It's God Himself working not just to save us, but to sanctify us. 2:26 And to be sanctified simply means that we are being conformed into the image and likeness of Christ. 2:32 That God takes the truth of his word and the power of the Holy Spirit in us like a hammer and a chisel to chisel away everything in our life that does not look like Jesus. 2:43 And the reason that he's doing this is not even for you, that the reason that God works in you, both to will and work, here's why. 2:52 It's for his good pleasure. 2:56 That actually the reason that we exist is for the glory of God, that God does not exist so that all your dreams may come true, but that we exist for the glory of God. 3:08 And the reality is that none of your dreams will come true until you understand that your role is to bring God glory. 3:15 You know, one of the most popular psalms in the whole world is the 23rd Psalm. 3:21 And I think the reason that so many Americans like it is because in the beginning of it, the first couple of verses in the 23rd Psalm, they sound a lot like God's really into me. 3:32 I mean, it says the Lord is my shepherd. 3:35 And that's capital L, capital O, capital R, capital D. 3:38 When you see that translation in the Bible, that is the covenant name of God, that the Lord Yahweh, the creator of all things, is my shepherd, and I shall not want. 3:50 That means he gives me everything that I need. 3:53 He goes on to say he makes me lie down in green pastures. 3:57 He leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul, he leads me in paths of righteousness. 4:06 And I think a part of the reason that this ver this this chapter in in Psalms has gotten so popular is because we see the me and the my in there a lot. 4:14 And we we look at that and go, hey, Pastor, it looks like he's really into me until the next verse comes. 4:20 And it says, for his name's sake. 4:25 To quote my friend Matt Chandler, listen, man, it ain't about you. 4:29 God is for you. 4:31 Anybody that gives his son to die on the cross for you is for you. 4:34 It's just not all about you. 4:36 And the reason that we exist is for the sake, the renown, the name, the glory of God. 4:42 And so a part of the way God works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 4:48 In John 15, Jesus gives us this incredible invitation. 4:51 He says, Come here, abide in me. 4:52 That means stay close, stay close to me, and I will stay close to you. 4:57 And it's almost as if the disciples are looking at him, going, like, well, how do we do that? 5:01 Because the promise is huge. 5:02 He says, Apart from me, you can do nothing, nothing. 5:06 That my father is like the gardener. 5:08 I'm the I'm the branch, I'm the vine, and you're the branches. 5:12 So as long as you stay close to me, I will produce the kind of fruit in and through you that you were looking for, like love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control. 5:22 He says, For apart from me you can do nothing. 5:26 And then he looks right at his disciples and he doubles down. 5:29 All right, boys, you want to know how you stay close to me? 5:32 He says, Abide in my word, and I will abide in you. 5:38 For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 5:45 Folks, may we be all about partnering with God and his work in and through us for his good pleasure. 5:52 See you tomorrow.
